Common Side Effects and How To Manage Them

  • When starting or increasing your dose of medication, you may experience some initial side effects. For many people, these side effects decrease or disappear as your body adjusts to the medication.

  • For some, these side effects can persist throughout the duration of treatment.

  • Starting at a lower dose and increasing your dose more slowly can help to curb these common side effects.

  • Nausea, Vomiting, Gas and Bloating-Eat smaller meals more slowly. Avoid high fat, high sugar and heavily processed foods. Nausea may also be caused by low blood sugar, eating a simple carbohydrate snack can help to alleviate this type of nausea.

  • Constipation-Stay hydrated by increasing your water intake and consuming high water content foods such as fresh fruit.

  • Diarrhea - Increase soluble fiber intake and drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration.

  • Indigestion and Heartburn - Avoid laying down for 1-2 hours after eating. Eat smaller meals more slowly and avoid high fat and acidic foods such as caffeinated beverages, tomatoes and citrus fruit.

  • Headaches - Dehydration and low blood sugar may result in headaches. Drinking plenty of fluids and eating a simple carbohydrate snack such as a banana can help to alleviate headaches.

  • Loose Skin - Rapid weight loss and decrease in elastin may lead to loose and sagging skin. Stay hydrated and maintain a well-balanced diet that includes fresh fruits, fish, nuts and ample protein. Avoid highly processed foods and simple sugar. Implement a healthy exercise routine which includes strength training.

  • Decreased urination or swelling of the legs, ankles, or feet

  • Vision changes

  • Fainting, dizziness, light-headedness, sweating, confusion or drowsiness, persistent headache, slurred speech, shakiness, fast heartbeat, anxiety or irritability or mood changes, hunger, weakness, or feeling jittery

  • Persistent constipation despite treatment, abdominal swelling or distention or blood in the stool.
